         OPENING THE CABIN

The neighbors did not cover their chimney
and a raccoon descended the flue
easier than if he had a key to the front door.

He decided to burgle the place all winter:
tear out mattress stuffing, open cupboards,
tip jars and eat from the broken ones on the floor.

         Before the snow ever left
or the first low muffle of an engine
approached down the road, he was gone .  .  .

over the mountain, across a river,
still chuckling about the unpaid rent.
